Australian Open - Round 1 Recap
Four birdies were matched with four bogeys as Brooke Henderson posted an even round of 72 to be the best placed Canadian after the first day of the ISPS Handa Australian Women’s Open.
South Korean golfers Jin Young Ko, and Jiyai Shin are on top of the leaderboard after brilliant opening rounds at the picturesque Kooyonga Golf Club in Adelaide, South Australia.
They are just in front of 10 players on -4 and a further 10 on -3 in a tightly bunched field.
Playing in the afternoon, Shin opened her tournament with a birdie on the first hole on her way to a bogey free 67 while fired nine birdies and two bogies to take the lead with a 7-under 65.
Henderson played in the morning and failed to take advantage of the calm conditions and perfect 21C temperature.
“I didn’t play that great today, which is kind of unfortunate, but I feel like I did some really good things so I can definitely work on that for hopefully the next three days,” the World No.14 said after her round.
“I’ve just got to hit a few putts because that’s where things let me down a little bit today.
“I thought we had a really good plan for this golf course but a couple of mis-hit shots put me in the wrong position and a couple of putts that didn’t fall my way but hopefully I’ll fix that tomorrow.
There two other Canadians in the field Alena Sharp (74) and Anne-Catherine Tanguay (76) will have to play well tomorrow to make the cut.
South Korea’s Sun Young Yoo and former World No.1 Lydia Ko were among the players to shoot 4-under while Americans Megan Khang and Erynne Lee are a further shot back on 3-under.
