WGC Bridgestone Invitational - Power Rankings
Personally, I'm a big fan of the World Golf Championship series. Comprised of four annual tournaments, WGC events have a proven history of attracting the top golfers in the world and this weeks WGC Bridgestone Invitational is no exception.
Located in Akron Ohio, the South Course at Firestone Country Club will once again be the host venue for this weeks event. The cream of the world’s golfing crop face a stern challenge every time they descend on the fabled Firestone Country Club. There’s no doubt the format will provide excitement. Firestone has a rich history of testing the world’s best players, which it has done for 22 years as the site of the World Series of Golf and now the present home of the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational. The Par 70, 7,400 yard course will challenge golfers of all abilities and is often referred to as 'The Monster', a name that originated from golf legend Arnold Palmer.
The field this week is looking fierce, with any one of them posing a threat of throwing down great scores. A difficult task this week, we've reviewed the golfers, and here's a look at our top picks to keep an eye on...
Jason Day - The worlds current #1 golfer needs no justification for making this list. 10 of 11 cuts made this year with 6 top 10 finishes. Playing great as of late, expect a solid performance from Day this week.
Partick Reed - Another player who has been consistently in the top 10, Reed is still in the hunt for a victory. A solid track record at this event, he's due for a win.
Bubba Watson - In the hunt for his 10th PGA Tour victory, Bubba Golf should be in full force this week. Last years runner up will be looking to up the ante with a solid performance.
Shane Lowry - The defending champion will undoubtedly be looking for a repeat. Coming off the heels of a solid US Open performance, with he unfortunately faltered in the final round; one way to bounce back would be a title defense this week.
Jim Furyk - A proven history at Firestone with 9 top 10's but still chasing that elusive victory. Coming off a solid performance at the Quicken Loans National, Furyk will be looking to build on that momentum.
Dustin Johnson - After winning the first Major of his career, the adrenaline and confidence must be soaring for DJ. Although he doesn't have an amazing record at Firestone, that could all change in the coming days.
Adam Scott - After a hot start to the season with back to back wins, Adam has been quiet the last couple months. The 2011 champion knows what it takes to win at Firestone and will undoubtedly be looking for another taste of victory.
Jordan Spieth - Although he's been a little hit-and-miss as of late, you can never count out the likes of Jordan Spieth. He always seems to step up his game when it counts, including top 20 finishes in all his last 6 WGC events.
Bill Haas - Playing some solid golf as of late, I've been keeping an eye on Bill for a few weeks and I think he's ready to pounce into the winners circle at any point. 4 top 10's this season, but still chasing a victory; it could be this week.
Zach Johnson - With thirteen consecutive appearance at this event, Zach couldn't be more familiar with this course. If his short game is firing, look for Zach to be in contention this week.
Rickie Fowler - Although struggling a bit as of late, Rickie is always a crowd favorite. He's chalked up 7 top 10's this season with 1 victory. He has a solid history at Firestone with a couple top 10's.
Brooks Koepka - Seems to be gaining momentum as of late; Brooks has accumulated 4 top 10's this season and will be looking to add to it this week. Shot sub-par in all 4 rounds here last year.
Sleeper Pick
Smylie Kaufman - I really enjoy watching Smylie play golf. He's been quietly making his way through the 2016 season and will be looking to build on last weeks momentum, where he finished T10 at the Quicken Loans National.
