Sven Tumba Classic Ignites 20th World Golfers Championship
The 20th anniversary celebration of the World Golfers Championship (WGC) will tee-off first with an exciting new two-day tournament - the inaugural Sven Tumba Classic which has been introduced in memory of WGC founder, the late world renowned sporting icon Sven Tumba.
The Classic will be hosted at the outset of the World Final in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South
Africa. WGC’s celebration of ‘20 years of Democracy, Friendship, Sport and Business’ falls perfectly in line with South Africa’s own 20 year celebration of democracy and is a reminder to the golfing world of the friendship that was shared between Sven Tumba and former president Nelson Mandela, who passed away in December last year.
This year’s WGC and WGI (Invitational) golfers are invited to be the first to compete in the Sven Tumba Classic by entering either the individual division or as a two-person patnership in the team event. The competition will be played over 36 holes as an individual stableford for the individual title, and as a two-person team where both scores will count. Players will compete for the trophy and a share in the prize pool of US$10,000, according to SAGA amateur rules.
Proceeds from the WGI entries will be donated to the Sven Tumba Foundation, a ‘Sport For Education’ non-profit organisation that was started in South Africa in 2006 with the ethos that every child has the right to grow up with love, with play, with sport and above all, with education.
Craig Clay-Smith, spokesperson for World Golf Events South Africa, the SA event owners and organisers, commented, “The addition of the Sven Tumba Classic and the extended tournament package has drawn tremendous interest from countries all over the world to participate in this year’s commemorative World Final.”
He added that together with the event accommodation partner, Tsogo Sun, World Golf Events SA had secured an entire hotel that will be dedicated to the 20th anniversary and will be branded the ‘World Golfers Championship – Tsogo Sun’ hotel.
“The programme this year will be like none before and promises to deliver on an unforgettable golfing and entertainment experience that KwaZulu-Natal, as a leading world event host province, has become renown for,” concluded Clay-Smith.
